Fire prevention, reimagined: Preventing wildfires before they start
Hydra, a part AI-powered application built in Next.js, is designed to optimize controlled burn strategies for wildfire and ecosystem management, leveraging historical data. Hydra identifies the optimal location and intensity, measured as fire radiative power (FRP) in megawatts, for a controlled burn within a given region. Hydra uses real-time environmental data to identify controlled-burn locations. Furthermore, Hydra employs an ML XGB Boost prediction model to determine the controlled fire's intensity (FRP), enabling forestry officials and firefighters to better understand smoke residue and the controlled fire's intensity, reducing previous risks associated with controlled fire use. Our unique research can potentially change the landscape of wildfire prevention forever.
Surrounded by news of devastating wildfires in California, we became deeply aware of their impact on communities and the environment. Seeing how unpredictable fires could destroy landscapes and disrupt lives made us want to find better ways to prevent them. This inspired us to create Hydra, an application, that helps determine the most effective locations and intensities for controlled burns, employing data to reduce wildfire risks before they become disasters.
